To ensure coordination of the performance of duties falling on state agencies for the national implementation of the obligations arising from the “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development, in which the leaderships of the ministries of Economy, Culture, Foreign Affairs, Health, Labour and Social Protection of Population, Education, Ecology and Natural Resources, Youth and Sport, Agriculture and Justice, and State Statistical Committee, State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs and State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDPs of the Republic of Azerbaijan are represented, has been created under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Ali Ahmadov by the 6 October 2016 Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a mechanism for monitoring and reporting on achievement of SDGs at national level has been established, and concrete tasks were assigned to the relevant state agencies.
Thus, based on the instruction of the President, the Council has identified national priorities and indicators under global goals and targets that are of importance to Azerbaijan until 2030, and ensured that the state programmes and strategies focusing on socio-economic areas in the country are brought in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the request of the Council, central and local executive authorities and legal entities where the state is the majority stakeholder (shareholder) must, once in a year, ensure submission of statistical data on indicators of achievement of SDGs to the State Statistical Committee and a report on the work performed to the Council.
In accordance with the mechanism formed, the Council ensures submission of the Voluntary National Report to the High-Level Political Forum and the relevant report on measures implemented for achievement of SDGs to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Under the above-mentioned Decree, the Ministry of Economy has been entrusted with establishing the relevant Secretariat to ensure the Council’s activities and carrying out its function. In particular, to organise the Council’s activities efficiently, the Ministry has formed Working Groups consisting of authorised representatives of state agencies in the areas of i) economic development and decent work, ii) social, iii) environmental issues, and iv) monitoring and evaluation.
